Defense-tech company Anduril has shared new details about the augmented-reality headset for the military it's prototyping with Meta, including a vision for ordering drone strikes via eye-tracking and voice commands. Quay Barnett, who leads the efforts as a vice president at Anduril following a career in the Army’s Special Operations Command, says his fundamental focus revolves around the AI technology advancements that will be integrated into these smart glasses for warfare.
Barnett explains that the AR headset for the military not only provides advanced capabilities to soldiers on the field but also expands their situational awareness in increasingly complex environments. This is where AI technology comes in. "Artificial intelligence support is crucial in decisions of life and death," Barnett says, highlighting the high-stakes consequences that could result from any lag or technical failure in the system.
What the system proposes to do is to track the user's gaze and move the cursor precisely based on that, allowing the soldiers to order drone strikes with a single eye-movement. Moreover, voice control adds another dimension of usability, streamlining the process even further. Meta and Andruil are working together to ensure the system runs smoothly, from the initial design to the final implementation.
